As I discussed in my article on Mindfulness, doing ordinary things with extraordinary attention, can help us to find happiness in every moment.
By noticing the beauty around you; whether you are walking in the countryside or stuck at your stuffy corner desk; lying on a beach enjoying the sounds of the sea or standing in the world’s longest queue, if you can find the beauty in each and every situation, you will start to appreciate everything as it is, making your very own existence more joyful.
If you’re reading this thinking, “Yeah right! Not even a crack addict on the most transcendent high could enjoy where I am right now“, then you need to open your eyes. When faced with the daily grind and having to grin and bear some of the most tedious aspects of our life, it can be difficult to find the beauty in anything so I want to give you some starter points as to how to go about this.
One of the most important things that I teach are the 3P’s.

- The Power of Now
- The Power of Belief
I’m just going to talk about the first two today as they are fundamental to creating the foundation for happiness.
The Power of Now
Yesterday has passed. Tomorrow is not yet here. The only time we have is NOW. As humans we possess a proclivity for spending too much time thinking about yesterday and worrying about tomorrow.
We cannot fully experience the moment we are currently in when we “live” in another time zone like the past or the future. It is only when are fully present, soaking up the sounds, the smells, the feelings we are feeling, that we can begin to be at peace with where we are in that moment.
I once read a quote by Shantideva,(an 8th Century Indian Buddhist), which I’ve never forgotten;
If you can solve your problem, then what is the need in worrying?
If you cannot solve your problem, then what is the use in worrying?
In other words, half of the things you spend your time procrastinating or worrying about may or may not even happen so why waste your time and sacrifice the moment you are in right now?
The Power of Choice
Everything you have ever done, has resulted from a thought. And from that thought you have made a choice. If that thought is no longer serving you, realise that it can be changed. Choose to control it rather than allow it to dictate who you are or what you do.
Your beliefs are a direct result of your thoughts and what you believe determines the choices you make. As you read this, know that you are the result of the choices you have made along the way. Use your Power of Choice to create a new reality.
You always get a choice. Choose to think a new thought.
The Power of Now and the Power of Choice are the most “power-full” when used together. If you remember that you always have a choice in every moment, every moment becomes a choice.
Whatever happens happens. It’s how you choose to react to it that matters. The point of power is always in the present moment.
Today, try to notice the beauty around you, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. You can only be alive in the present moment so try not to go time-travelling, just for today. Notice how you feel. Anytime you find yourself drifting off, don’t berate yourself, just notice it and come back to the present. It takes practice but then doesn’t everything that’s worthwhile?
