7.Something that not many people know is that a healthy gut is integral to health. I’m sure you’ve seen those ads on tv about drinking specially formulated “bacteria-friendly” yoghurt drinks to restore the good bacteria? Well, unfortunately drinking one of those a day is unlikely to be enough.
The body has a very delicate ecosystem which is inhabited by microorganisms that play an important role in keeping us healthy. Otherwise known as lactic bacteria or friendly bacteria, they live in our digestive tract, strenghthen our immune system and ward off the “unfriendly” bacteria and pathogens which cause disease. Don’t freak out at the thought of something living inside of you – good bacteria is, as the name suggests a good thing!
One of the most common types of unfriendly organisms is Candida albicans or Candida. It is a pathogenic yeast or fungus that should co-exist harmoniously alongside the friendly microorganisms. However it can easily grow out of control, especially if you are eating a high-sugar, acid-forming, low mineral diet. It takes advantage of any weakness within the body and can cause many symptoms which listed are below.
First, I want to bring your attention to antibiotics. Forty years ago, these little pills became THE miracle drug adminstered to all and sundry for a plethora of illnesses from a cold to acne. While they do kill off the unfriendly bacteria, they also kill off the friendly ones, upsetting the inner ecosystem allowing disease-causing bacteria to run riot. Interestingly, the word antibiotics means “against life”.
You may not think it’s so bad having too many of the pesky mites running about but when you understand that an overgrowth of candida can lead to the following diseases, you may want to think about harmonising the body internally before it get’s out of hand.
Candida has been linked to many symptoms:
- Food allergies
- Digestive disorders
- Skin rashes
- Chronic constipation
- Recurring headaches
- Mental fuzziness
- Poor memory
- Chemical and environmental sensitivities
- Loss of sex drive
Candida also occurs side-by side with other diseases such as chronic fatigue, cancer, AIDS, Epstein-Barr virus, bronchitis, pneumonia and immune system deficiencies. As you can see it’s extremely important to harmonise the body’s inner system in order to stay healthy or regain perfect health.
There are many factors that contribute to a weakened immune system and upset the body’s system. Some of these factors include; stress, fast food diets, chemicals used in our foods and environments, the widespread use of medicines such as antibiotics and birth control pills. So most things then! But the good news is that although we can’t always control everything everyday everywhere we go, we can control what we put into our bodies and what we surround ourselves with at home.
Donna Gates has written a book called “The Body Ecology Diet”, (on my book list to the left), which I would recommend to everyone, whether you think you’re healthy or not. Chances are if you eat a lot of meat, dairy and sugar, (all acid-forming), then it’s likely that the unfriendly bacteria are in excess of the friendly. I’m not saying you definitely do have Candida – I’m just giving you the information so that if you do have any of the above symptoms, I hope you will investigate them alongside the use of this book, allowing you to cure yourself. It’s up to you to decide what to do with what you’ve learned.

3. Do you crave alcoholic beverages?
4. Does tobacco smoke really bother you?
5. Have you at any time in your life taken antibiotics for respiratory, urinary, or other infections?
6. Have you taken birth control pills for more than 2/6 years?
7. Does exposure to perfumes, insecticides or other chemicals provoke mild or severe symptoms?
8. Are your symptoms worse on damp, muggy days or in moldy places?
9. Have you ever had athlete’s foot, ringworm or any other fungus infections of the skin or nails?
Do you ever experience the following?:
- Fatigue or lethargy
- Feeling of being “drained”
- Poor memory
- Feeling “spacey” or “out of it”
- Unable to make decisions
