RECIPE: Green Machine

I’ve blogged before on how to make the perfect green smoothie¬†which i think is a great guide on how to make a kickass vitamin-filled boost. The more you drink your greens and clean up your diet, the more you will crave green foods and drinking green juices and green smoothies will become part of your everyday life. I wouldn’t be without them now. What I love about smoothies is that they are a brilliant vessel for lots of other super foods. Check out my recipe below of my latest concoction.


Green Machine

I have loaded up on superfoods in this smoothie but they are not essential, just an added bonus. The smoothie will taste delicious just with the first 3 ingredients. Enjoy getting your green on and please share this with your friends. Tell me in the comments below what your favourite combo is.

Greetings from New Jersey! I’m bored at work so I decided to check out your blog on my iphone during lunch break. I enjoy the information you present here and can’t wait to take a look when I get home. I’m surprised at how quick your blog loaded on my phone .. I’m not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Hi Polly, I just made an awful green smoothie… It was SO chewy I was gagging on it. I put in the following: 3 handfuls of kale, 1/2 c frozen blueberries, 1/2 frozen banana, ice cubes, 1 c plain almond milk, 1 c water and 1 T chia seeds. The result was clumpy brown mud. I tried to strain it in cheesecloth but ended up drinking it as is.

Can you offer some suggestions on how to manage the balance between liquid and greens or even straining vs not? I also have a juicer but I figured kale wouldn’t work in it and also I’d lose more nutrients by not consuming the meat of the veg…

Your suggestions are welcome! :S

Hey Shannon, hmmm. Okay, well the first thing Id say is that you dont have any sweet fruit that is going to make it taste good (ie grapes, apple juice or apples, pear etc). Secondly, kale is really strong in smoothies so i would recommend using spinach or romaine lettuce as it doesnt taste of anything. Thirdly, chia seeds will make it clumpy because they absorb liquid and form a gel-like substance so go easy on them. Also, you can juice kale but it works better in a masticating machine than a centrifugal machine. Here’s a guide that will help you on making green smoothies. Think 40% fruit to 60%greens.
