If you’re into raw food, it’s likely that you have heard of Shazzie. If you’re into super foods, the chances are high that you’ve bought superfoods from the company she founded and grew into Europe’s largest superfood store, DetoxYourWorld. Shazzie is presenter of the TV show Raw Kitchen (which I’m due to appear on anyday now!), Empress of the raw chocolate revolution and author of five books. Shazzie is a force to be reckoned with – this women exudes love when you meet her, her energy is wildly infectious and she is a glowing example of someone that walks their talk when it comes to creating an ecstatic life.

Maverick, revolutionary, loving
What does wellness or wellbeing mean to you?
It’s holistic to me. We need to get out of our boxes and stop compartmentalising ourselves, then we’ll get better health. A pill might suppress symptoms but it won’t make for a really well person in the long run. Only creating a balanced life can do that. It’s not easy in these hectic times, but there are tricks and tips out there for people to get inspired by. Taking two minutes an hour to check in with what we need can make a huge difference to our wellbeing. It’s a beautiful journey to become truly well. Defo one worth taking coz the other option isn’t worth thinking about. Leaving no stone unturned is mandatory when getting the mind, body and spirit unified.
What was the catalyst that turned you onto living a more natural and holistic lifestyle?
I was 16 when I went veggie and 18 when I went vegan. I was reading about animal cruelty in magazines and wanted nothing to do with it. I wouldn’t want to be treated like that, so why would I accept it for another being? That was it for me. From then on I became “the weird one”. It saved my life.
Can you tell us why you are so passionate about raw food and why more people should take more notice of what products they consume and how they live?
Yeah! I never felt well as a child or adult. I had low energy, got ill a lot and felt very disconnected. Raw food is the biggest factor in my wellness journey. It changed me almost overnight. It’s not the only thing I do that’s different from the norm, but it’s the biggest and most consistent thing. Think how many times a day we eat! A retreat is NOTHING compared to altering our eating habits!
I’m not a preacher. I aim to inspire. I don’t look almost 45 😉 I certainly don’t act it. I just want people to know that there are so many choices they may not have considered yet, raw food and superfoods being two of them. If your readers are feeling overweight, sick, tired, unhappy or even if they just have bad skin or are starting to look old, then getting at least 50% raw food into their diet could really help. And if they’re already feeling OK or even great, then raw food could make them feel like a superbeing! My experience has been that it opens you up to the infinite possibilities of the universe. You get the gifts that the universe it waiting to give you when you stop blocking your energy with dense foods. It’s the food of the future as far as I’m concerned!
What was the biggest challenge you found when going raw and how did you overcome it?
I was lucky really. I didn’t have any. I slipped up a few times but then I realised that didn’t even matter. When most of the food you eat is raw, and GREEN, then any other challenges fall away. I’d recommend your readers ate 60% of their food green! It makes a HUGE difference to health and wellbeing.
For anyone wanting to upgrade their health or diet, what is your advice on what to change first and how?
Make it easy! It’s an exciting time. Add big green salads to your food. Put fruit on your breakfast. Make your snacks raw: kale chips, raw chocolate, dried nuts and seeds. Go to health shops and check out what’s new in the raw sections. Check out my recipes on my web site, Shazzie.com, for more inspiration. I’ve even got a free raw food book on there for people to download now and get started right away. In this day and age, it couldn’t be easier to eat raw food and to get healthy. Just decide what you want and how you’re going to do it, then do it. Focus your mind, get clear, get strong. It’s your life, pave the way to the future you want, and don’t let any of this mainstream nonsense distract you.
What does an average intake of food consist of for you per day?
Hard to do average anything, Polly 😉 It does depend what I’m doing. I usually have a raw green soup, that’s stuffed full of superfoods such as chlorella and herbs such as gynostemma. It’s warm because I blend it with hot water, and it’s super tasty. I will often have a salad. A few healing herbal teas such as reishi or chaga. I might drink some chia milk which is often made with a herbal tea base and flavoured with vanilla and some tasty essential oils. I sometimes make a protein smoothie with bananas, raw protein powder, herbs, superfoods and lashings of purple corn extract. And of course, having written the revolutionary book Naked Chocolate, I have to have some raw chocolate every single day. It’s the law. I also take supplements: DHA, EPA, B12, Multivits, Q10 and anything else knocking about in my cupboard.
Who are your dream dinner guests and what would you serve them?
My future man!!!! I’d serve him me. Maybe covered in raw chocolate, maybe not.
Peace Pilgrim. I’d serve her buttery avocado spread on home made raw foccacia with a champagne glass full of Japanese water kefir and rose oil.
Russell Brand (obvs). I’d serve him my recipe Russell Brand’s hair fell on my plate, which is seaweed tagliatelle with a mushroomy creamy sauce. Being a high-vibrational vegan, he’d appreciate it more if it was served on me, like one of those sushi meals where they eat it off a person. Unless my future man is there and he’s not Russell. Then he’d have a plate like Peace Pilgrim, but I might have to play footsie with him under the table.
Buddha. I’d offer him everything in my house and he’d eat whatever he wanted then let it go, not talking about it ever again because it’s wouldn’t be NOW.
(Shazzie, Polly here. Don’t hate me but I have to tell you that Russell Brand once asked me out for a drink in a Starbucks on Carnaby Street many moons ago. I turned him down because a) I had a boyfriend called Russell at the time and b) he looked like he needed a bath. (This was before his Hollywood makeover!)
What lessons have you learned in the last few years since starting your health journey that have improved or enriched your life in some way?
Oh lordy. That the mind affects EVERYTHING! I kept making myself ill, regardless of my healthy ways… leg tumour, lyme disease, vertigo… spot the pattern? Unable to stand up for long. Unable to move forward. So I healed myself naturally of all of these. Not once going to a Doctor. AND THEN… BANG. Hit by a lorry, disabled for 3 months. Had to go to the Doctor, though it was of no use. Finally did a shamanic ceremony and asked for my legs back. I got them but at a VERY steep price. I had to let go of a story that I’d been running ALL MY LIFE. I can’t tell you, Polly, how amazing it feels to not have that weight in my brain affecting every cell in my body anymore. I feel ridiculously light and happy since then. So, though food is a BIGGIE, it’s not the whole story. The whole story is the whole story, and even then, it’s just a story.
Letting go, falling away, giving the mind space to not think is the biggest gift we can give ourselves. Meditation, stillness, chanting, “mindfulness” all help. But the key, the REAL key to it all (the meaning of life!!!) is to JUST be present with what is here now. Not what was there before. Not what may be there next. But what’s here now. That’s all there is. It’s complete liberation, Polly. It’s being fully awake. Not running any old programs. It feels like Christmas as a kid, you become constantly in awe and wonder at how awesome everything really really is. And that’s real health.

What can we look forward to from you in the future?
Hmmmm…. I’ve been wondering the same. Where do you go after having Europe’s biggest superfood’s company, writing five books, and having your own TV series? I don’t know yet. I’m feeling smaller live events might happen. I’d like to get more personal with people again. But I’ve not planned a thing yet. I am too busy enjoying myself right now. I’d also LOVE to do more TV work. I love it. It’s what I was made for. But only if it’s part of my destiny. I’m never veering off my path, it’s too thorny out there. I’d also like to expand my apps and guided meditations at some point. I love them, and how easy they are for people to have a piece of love in their pockets at all times.

Russell Brand’s hair fell on my plate
If I am not destined to be Russell’s soulmate, then all I can do is invent a dish that looks like his hair. One year we made a Russell fairy to top our minimalist Christmas tree. Evie loves Russell and wants him to be her step-father (that’s my affirmation; she doesn’t understand the word step-father yet). Serves two. Keeps for two days in a sealed container in the fridge.
100g dried sea spaghetti
50g sunflower sprouts
10ml Udo’s Choice oil
50g raw tahini
50g white miso
1Ž2 teaspoon Blue Manna
1Ž2 teaspoon lion’s mane mushroom powder
Soak the sea spaghetti in warm water for at least thirty minutes, drain and rinse. Add to a large mixing bowl.
Remove any shells from the sunflower sprouts and add to the bowl.
In a small bowl, mix the miso, tahini, Blue Manna, lion’s mane and oil. Pour into the large mixing bowl and massage everything together with your hands before serving.
