Natural alternatives to your toxic beauty products

by Polly N on January 16, 2014

Following on from yesterday’s post about the 7 chemicals in your beauty products that you’re probably still using, I thought I’d follow up today and offer you some healthier natural alternatives.

While doing as much as I can be a an active particpant in my healing from cancer, it’s important for me to completely eliminate as many toxins from my life as possible.  And this extends to my beauty regime because hey, I’m a girl and I still want to smell and look pretty but I’m not willing to compromise for the sake of my health.

So here are my favourite replacements for the toxic beauty products I used to use:

The problem: Parabens

Contain chemicals with oestrogen-like properties, which have been linked to breast cancer.

Natural alternative:Kimberly Sayer Ultra Light Organic Facial Moisturiser – SPF30

The problem: As above

Natural alternative: Kimberly Sayer Aromatic Organic Night Repair Cream

The problem: Mineral oil

Mineral Oil also known as petroleum jelly is an extremely cheap and common petroleum derivative used in moisturisers, lip balms, facial oils, conditioner and hair treatments.

Natural alternative: Lavera Body Spa Coconut Dream Body Lotion

The problem: As above

Natural alternative: Oh-lief Natural Lip Balm

The problem: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES/1,4-Dioxane)

SLS is a known carcinogen, which can cause irritation to the scalp, eyes and skin including damage to the liver, lungs & immune system.

Natural alternative: Weleda Citrus Creamy Body Wash

The problem:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES/1,4-Dioxane)

Natural alternativeJohn Masters Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo for Normal Hair

The problem:

Thousands of chemicals are combined to make fragrance and because the manufacturers aren’t required to list each individual ingredient, there really is no way of knowing just what’s in it

Natural alternative: Mox Botanicals ASP Solid Perfume. I also like to use essential oils from DoTerra

The problem: Nanoparticles and Oxybenzone

Oxybenzone is an organic compound used in sunscreen, which oxidizes quickly when exposed to sunlight and may disrupt the normal functioning of the epidermis. It acts like oestrogen once it’s absorbed into the body and could be responsible for contributing to endometriosis in women. It also causes free radical damage by reducing the capabilities of antioxidants.

Natural alternative: Green People No Scent Sun Lotion SPF25
